The last two paragraphs of Sealed Off

The Norton Anthology World Literature裡選錄的封鎖

Lu Zongzhen arrived home in time for dinner. He was eating while reading his daughter's report card which had just arrived. He remembered what had happened on the tramcar, but Cuiyuan's face was a bit of a blur --- a face that was born to forget. He couldn't remember what she said, but he remembered his own words very well--- gently:
"How old --- are you?” and then it turned into a voice full of pain, “No, this won’t do! I can’t let you sacrifice your future!”

He was given a hot, wet, washcloth to wipe his face after the meal, then he walked to the bedroom, turned on the light. A black shell bug that was crawling halfway to the other end of the room crouched there motionless when the light turned on. Are you playing dead? Are you thinking? Crawling all day long, do you have time to think? Thinking is a painful business after all. Zongzhen turned off the light, and kept his finger on the switch. His palms started to sweat, and the beads of sweat started oozing on his body like small insects crawling. He turned on the light again. The black shell bug disappeared, crawled back to the nest.

    Are you playing dead?改成
Is it pretending to be dead?

Lu Zongzhen reached home just in time for dinner. He was eating while reading his daughter's report card which just arrived in the mail. He remembered what had happened on the tramcar, but Cuiyuan's face was a bit of a blur --- a face people tended to forget easily. He couldn't remember what she had said, but he clearly remembered his own words--- said he softly:
"How old are you?” and then it turned into a voice full of pain, “No, this won’t do! I can’t let you sacrifice your future!”
He was given a hot washcloth to wipe his face after the meal. Then he walked to the bedroom, turned on the light, and spotted a black shell bug crouching in the middle of the room floor motionless. It must be on its way crawling to the other end of the room. Was it playing dead? contemplating? The bug probably has little time to think as it was busy crawling all day long. Thinking is a painful business after all. Zongzhen turned off the light, and kept his finger on the switch. His palms started to sweat, his body as well; the oozing sweat felt like small insects crawling all over his body. He turned on the light again. The black shell bug disappeared—it had made its way back to the nest. (August 1943)

Chinese English.
