Thoughts about 1984

It’s torture for me. The main reading material is “1984” for English class this
semester. I watched the movie first. I disliked it. Then, I borrowed the audio books from the library and listened to it three times while I was doing house chores. It only made me dislike the story more. Why in the world is most great literature about tragedy? As Orwell said in “Why I Write,” “I wanted to write enormous naturalistic novels with unhappy endings.” Life has enough things that make us sad, I wish the teacher assigned something like “The Lord of the Rings,” “Harry Potter” or even “Twilight.” They are entertaining enough with a happy ending. For me, that’s what reading is all about--- To cheer you up. Back to the topic, I started to read the novel. You cannot imagine how I was suffering… Finally, I found a way that made the reading more exciting. I decided that I would be Big Brother. HA! Big Brother is watching you! Whatever you do, you cannot escape from my watch. I am the superior. I control your life, your spirit, your everything. Wow HA HA!  Am I going insane?

In part I, Orwell created a world where people have no control over their own life. They lived in misery, fear, and repression if they had doubts about Big Brother. Moreover, there was always not enough food and continuing war with one of the other two regions. Orwell’s Oceania is a terrible society even worse than Hitler’s Germany or Stalin’s Soviet Union where although they had their own kids as thought police spying on you at home, at least they didn't have the Telescreen in your house watching you 24 hours a day. My question is since Orwell wrote 1984 as a warning. We see how he criticized the world he created. Was he still considered a socialist? Another question, Is Obama considered a socialist? However, how do you like MY slogans?
War Is Peace
Freedom Is Slavery
Ignorance Is Strength
