Welcome to Taiwan (preparation outline)
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about Taiwan from three aspects.
INTRODUCTION
I. When I was young, I mean at your age. My dream was to travel all
around the world. So far, I've visited about 50 countries. Don’t make
your assumption too soon. No, I am not rich. It’s only because my
husband worked with United Airlines for many years, so I get to fly for
a much cheaper price than you.
II. Which country I love the best besides the US? Taiwan of course.
III. I think no one knows Taiwan better than me in this room including Mr.
Heislar. so I’m going to introduce Taiwan to you from three aspects.
A. First, a general description of Taiwan
B. Second, where you can visit in Taiwan
C. and third, food.
BODY
I. Let’s start by looking at a general description of Taiwan.
A. Who named Taiwan “Formosa?” Where is Taiwan located and
how big is Taiwan?
1. Taiwan was named Formosa by Portugal in 1590. It means
beautiful island.
2. It is located on the west of the Pacific Ocean.
3. It is 36,000 sq km. I see some of you look puzzled. Let me
say it another way. California is 11 times larger than Taiwan.
B. There is some unique geography you can see in Taiwan.
1. Taiwan has the largest number and density of high mountains
in the world.
a. 2/3 of the land is covered by mountains and foothills.
b. There are 286 mountains more than 3000 meters high
(9850 feet.)
2. Taiwan has one of the highest concentrations (more than 100
hot springs) and greatest variety of thermal springs in the
world varying from hot springs to cold springs, mud springs,
and seabed hot springs.
Plate and Philippine Sea Plate so Taiwan has evolved a
unique environment that produces high-temperature
springs with crystal-clear water, usually both clean and
safe to drink.
b. These hot springs are not only clean and potable but also
commonly used for spas and resorts.
C. You can experience four seasons in a day.
1. Tropic of cancer runs through south Taiwan. It’ll take you
one and a half hours from north to south by high speed train to
enjoy the tropical weather.
2. Driving up to the mountain, you’ll experience the summer,
spring, fall, and winter. There are not many places in the
world that can give you four seasons in a day including a
wonderful spa in hot springs.
(Transition: After a general description of Taiwan,)

II. I would like to go on to my second main point. Where you can
visit in Taiwan.
A. It is 6434 miles from San Francisco to Taiwan.
1. The flight will take 11-14 hours depending on the winds.
The picture shows Los Angeles, it's the best I could find.

2. There are so many places to visit, but I don’t have enough
time to show you. So I called Taiwan Tourist office in San
Francisco. They were very helpful and sent me this package.
There are three brochures that I put in the envelope. You can
take one later.
B. I’ll just briefly show you some pictures (What’s in this box?
Well, something better. Later…)
1. Fort San Domingo
Taiwan has been influenced by other countries. For
Taiwan has been influenced by other countries. For
example, the Dutch occupied Taiwan from 1624-1661. Here
in Dan Shuei, you’ll see a Dutch fort. I love this small town
very much because I went to college here.
The sunset is very famous at Fishermen's Wharf in Dan Shuei.

2. National Palace Museum:

After the ROC lost its mainland China territory in the Chinese
Civil War and fled to Taiwan in 1949. They moved the best
quality collection of Chinese art which was in the museum

interested in Chinese art.

3. Taipei 101, the tallest building in the world before 2010, 1. 4.
The elevator takes 37 seconds from the 5th floor to the 89th
floor. 1010 meters, 3313 feet per minutes. It is the fastest in
the world.
4. Hot springs
5. Cliff by the Pacific Ocean.
6. Tropical beach
(Transition: I’ll finish the sight seeing tour here. You’ll find a lot more
interesting places in the brochures. Let’s move on to my third point. )
III. For all my Taiwanese friends here, what we miss the most of Taiwan
is the food. Taiwanese love to eat. Just about every small town has a
food specialty. For example
A. Night market is one of the places where people hang out and have a
late night snack. Most streets in Taiwan are busy until late at night
around 1 or 2 o’clock.
B. Oyster pancake. The oyster is very small and fresh. I've never
found them here.
C. Stinky tofu. You either love it or hate it, like Limburger cheese.
I've never learned to like Limburger cheese but my husband loves
stinky tofu

D. And this. Pineapple cake. It is the No.1 snack in Taiwan. I was
thinking to buy some and then, I decided to make them special for
1. At first, I tried to use the blender and the food processor, but it
was a failure.
2. I had to slice the pineapple by hand.
3. Here are the ingredients.
4. I baked them yesterday.
5. Here they are.
6. I wrote down the ingredients just in case if you are allergic to
something. Don’t forget to take one before you leave.
CONCLUSION
I. I hope I did a good job introducing Taiwan by
A. a general description of Taiwan
Let me ask you a question.
How many times larger is California than Taiwan?
B. where you can visit in Taiwan
Hopefully with the brochures, you can get a better idea.
C. food in Taiwan
The pineapple cake is good to eat with a cup of tea.
Enjoy it.
II. Taiwanese are very friendly, and Taiwan is a very safe place to visit. I
hope in the future when you plan your vacation, you can think about
going there. If you have only 7-8 hours to transfer, I have a brochure
showing you a free half day tour from the airport. You’ll experience a
Very good introduction, a few grammatical errorsㄝbut no harm to your piece.

DeleteOK, let me tell you one of the answers after 9 years:
Delete"After the ROC lost its mainland China territory in the Chinese Civil War and fled to Taiwan in 1949."
Don't you feel it sounds strange? It lost a subject term in this sentence.
Delete
Delete
算!but~
Delete
