Is Lack of Civility Worldwide?

In 2005, I flew to Shanghai. When I was trying to retrieve my suitcases, I could not get close to the carousel
because of all the people crowding up to it blocking my access to my bags. I thought that was uncivilized and rude. When will the Chinese learn to be polite? When will their behavior catch up with their economic growth?

The day before yesterday I flew from Chicago to San Francisco, and what I could not believe was I experienced the same situation around the baggage carousel that was in Shanghai. I was shocked. What a lack of civility! I could only wait outside of the area, watch my bags go round several times for 20 minutes then I was able to get to the carousel and grabbed them. What has happened to our society?

Thinking back about my travels to my home town of Taipei, I can’t recall if I experienced the same thing trying to retrieve my bags even though I went back there quite often. Maybe unconsciously, I am trying to protect my culture. I am still confused.

Ha, really? So far I am lucky as I haven't had this kind of experience. Is it possible that the domestic area is too small for too many flights?  (I mean they come at almost the same time?) Hope I won't experience it at all -- it will be difficult for me (small woman) to get my luggage.

People always criticize in Asia the traffic is terrible, if you go to New York you will experience the same thing. When US becomes crowded as in Asia, they are all the same!

I called my mom this morning to have her compare the differences between Chicago, Shanghai, and Taipei since she's just finished her journey. She answered me: "都是一個鬼樣."
She said that the only thing can make a difference is you arrive at the carousel before anyone else and you are lucky enough that your luggage comes out early.
Good luck~ my small woman.

I'll say the traffic is bad in any big city. The big difference for me is there are countless motorcycles and bicycles in the traffic mix in Asia. More people do follow the law in New York City than for example~ Shanghai, but, I think you're right. People are the reason travel has become such a hassle nowadays...

But  traffic is the issue, Taiwaness are often impatient while driving. I wish there're more drivers with etiquette.
